Position Description – Accounting Assistant

About the Role
As an Assistant Accountant in a fast-paced retail company backed by private equity, you will play a crucial role in supporting the finance and accounting team. The company is experiencing rapid growth, and this position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to its success. You will work closely with the accounting team, assisting with various financial tasks, ensuring accurate financial records, and supporting the overall financial operations of the organization.

More specifically your responsibilities will include:

  • Cash management including the process the bank reconciliations.
  • General Ledger Maintenance: Assist in maintaining accurate and up-to-date general ledger entries, including journal entries, reconciliations, and adjusting entries as required.
  • Payroll Processing: Take ownership of the weekly payroll process, ensuring accurate and timely processing of employee payroll. This includes reviewing timesheets, calculating wages, deductions, and overtime, and maintaining employee records related to payroll.
  • Accounts Payable and Receivable: Support the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions by processing invoices through lightyear, verifying billing accuracy, preparing payment schedules, Tax and super payments , and managing vendor and customer inquiries.
  • Financial Reporting: Assist in preparing financial statements, management reports, and other financial analyses to support decision-making processes. Collaborate with the accounting team to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Inventory Control: Work closely with the inventory management team to reconcile physical inventory counts with financial records, analyze variances, and contribute to inventory valuation processes.
  • Expense Management: Assist in reviewing and reconciling employee expense reports, ensuring compliance with company policies and timely reimbursement.
  • Financial System Support: Assist in maintaining and enhancing financial systems, including ERP software, by identifying opportunities for process improvement and troubleshooting issues.
  • Compliance and Audit Support: Collaborate with external auditors, providing necessary documentation and support during yearly audits, ensuring adherence to internal/external financial controls and regulatory requirements.
  • Ad-hoc Analysis: Support the Financial Controller, accounting team and Leadership team with ad-hoc financial analysis and projects, providing accurate and insightful information to aid in decision-making processes.

What you’ll need:

Reporting to the Financial Controller, this role is focusing on bookkeeping, accounting and payroll. You will need to demonstrate:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA Preferred but not essential
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in accounting or finance, preferably in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting standards.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (Xero) and Microsoft Excel (Advance); experience with other ERP systems is a plus.
  • Experience with payroll processing software and knowledge of (Australian) payroll regulations and compliance.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional and cross borders teams.
  • Highly organized and proactive, demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to take initiative to streamline processes.
  • Familiarity with private equity ownership structures and related financial processes is an advantage.
